Bio
Mauricio Dawid is currently one of the most active double bass players in Buenos Aires. Internationally he has played with many great jazz figures such as Antonio Hart, Robin Eubanks, Anthony Wonsey, Mark Turner, Ralph Alessi, Jim Rotondi, Eve Cornelious, Steve Davis, Tim Ries, Johannes Bockholt, Vince Ector and Rex Richardson. He has toured Argentina, Latin America, the United States and China with the groups of Ernesto Jodos, Luis Nacht and Juan Pablo Arredondo. He has also played with many of the most renowned jazz musicians in Argentina, including Javier Malosetti, Sergio Verdinelli, Marcelo Gutfraind, Enrique Norris, Mariano Loiácono, Rodrigo Domínguez, Patricio Carpossi, Eloy Michelini, Daniel "Pipi" Piazzolla, Pepi Taveira, Ramiro Flores, Carlos Michelini, Gustavo Musso, Paula Shocron, Carlos Lastra, Roxana Amed, Lucio Balduini and Guillermo Romero, among others.
Mauricio studied double bass with Hernán Merlo, Juan Pablo Navarro, Javier Dragún (soloist of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires) and Jerónimo Carmona, and electric bass with Carlos Madariaga and Gustavo Giles. He also took lessons with American double bassists John Hèbert, Mark Helias, Scott Colley, Harish Raghavan, Ben Street, Danton Boller and Linda Oh. He is a graduate of the Instituto Superior de Música Popular and the jazz career of the Conservatorio Superior "Manuel de Falla", directed by pianist Ernesto Jodos. In 2014 he was accepted by New York University (New York University) and Queens University (Queens College) to pursue a Master's degree in jazz. In 2015, Mauricio was awarded a scholarship by the Banff Centre and participated in the Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music held in Canada and directed by pianist Vijay Iyer. There he took classes with Billy Hart, Wadada Leo Smith, Zakir Hussain, Mark Turner, Mat Maneri, Matt Garrison, Tyshawn Sorey and Ingrid Jensen, among others.
In addition to his solo career, Mauricio takes part in the projects of Sergio Verdinelli, Mariano Loiácono, Carlos Michelini, Carlos Casazza and Sergio Wagner, among others. His debut album Sonora was released in 2013 and was highly acclaimed by jazz critics. The album was presented live at the Buenos Aires International Jazz Festival in 2014 within the cycle of Kuai Music, a record label that Mauricio created with two colleagues in 2012 and was chosen by the digital magazine El Intruso as "Record Label of the Year" in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
