Bio

Sebastián Mazzalupo was born in Buenos Aires in 1974.
Composer, arranger and teacher; a saxophonist in all its forms, playing from alto saxophone to tenor, passing through soprano and baritone, without ever losing his musical identity, with an imposing presence that distinguishes him by the genuine and profound leadership of his sound.
Sebastián, a tireless seeker, restless on his journey, began studying saxophone at the age of sixteen. He went through various musical genres such as rock, funk, electronic, tango and folklore; until he became a jazz musician.

He graduated from the Buenos Aires School of Music (EMBA) as a saxophonist, and it was that personal search that allowed him to meet with great masters of the instrument of his country such as Carlos Michellini; Gabriel Santecchia; Ricardo Cavalli; Manuel Miranda; Carlos Lastra; Pablo Rodríguez and Marcelo Peralta, also studied improvisation with Juan Cruz De Urquiza and Guillermo Romero.

Throughout his career, Mazzalupo has had the opportunity to enter the local jazz community by playing and recording alongside great artists such as Carlos Lastra, Claudio Risso, Daniel Kovacich, Sergio Verdinelli, Guillermo Delgado and Hernán Merlo, Daniel Piazzolla, Richard Nant, Gustavo Musso, Mariano Sívori, Alejo Von Der Pahlen, Ernesto Zeppa, Cirilo Fernández and Ezequiel Piazza, among others.

Some of the projects in which he participated: Inmigrantes Big Band (River Plate music), Giusti Funk Corp, Afreak Band (contemporary African music with original repertoire), Brussels Big Band (original music composed by its director Emanuel Brusa), Dúo Monteleone & Mazzalupo (original music), El Heladero (“Cajas” album released by Notorious in 2003), Ernesto Zeppa Grupo (“Intuición” album released by PAI records in 2011).

His first work of his own compositions within jazz was reflected in the CD “Buenos Modales” (PAI Records, 2008) by LaTroupe quartet, a group that he formed together with Sebastián Valsecchi, Ernesto Zeppa and Gonzalo Fuertes.

He is currently going through a new creative and challenging stage that intersects with his continuous improvement. The beginning of 2016 finds him in New York enriching himself with inspiring study days together with some of the most influential saxophonists and current educators in the world of jazz: Chris Cheek, Donny McCaslin, Joel Frahm, Garry Dial and Guillermo Klein.

With an innovative approach, Sebastián Mazzalupo releases his second album as leader and forms a new quartet for which he summons Miguel Marengo, Juan Bayón and Carto Brandán, musicians who bring their distinctive and professional touch to this project. At the end of 2015, he recorded the “The Great Sculptor”, whose launch is announced in mid-2016 in the best jazz venues in Buenos Aires.
